CAS Student Program at the Casualty Loss Reserve Seminar in Philadelphia, PA

The Casualty Actuarial Society is offering an in-person Student Program at this year’s Casualty Loss Reserve Seminar in Philadelphia, PA on September 9, 2025.  Members of CAS Student Central are invited to participate in this FREE one-day program!

CAS Student Program Attendees Will:

  • Learn More About the CAS, Reserving, and the Property and Casualty Industry
  • Network and Connect with CAS Members
  • Attend Professional Concurrent Sessions and Student-Specific Sessions

Registration is open to members of CAS Student Central. Students who are not yet members can easily sign up online, and then register to attend the event. There are a limited number of spaces available, therefore any students that register after we have reached capacity will be placed on a waiting list.

There is no cost for students to register to attend the CAS Student Program. Attendees are only responsible for transportation to/from the one-day event.

CAS Hosts Student Conference in Los Angeles, CA

The Casualty Actuarial Society hosted 25 students in Los Angeles, California at the CAS Annual Meeting for a one-day Student Conference. The event provided a unique platform for students to connect with seasoned professionals in the field, delve into the latest developments in the CAS and P&C industry, and participate in Quick Byte sessions covering topics such as email security, cloud computing, and continuous data storytelling.

Participants represented 14 universities, including students from local actuarial programs, as well as others who flew in for the event. Among the attendees were three of the 2023 CAS Trust Scholarship recipients who participated in the overall conference in celebration of their outstanding achievements, and two CAS Student Central Summer Program Scholars who are part of a new pilot for Summer Program standouts!

When reflecting on their experiences, students overwhelmingly expressed appreciation for the networking opportunities with mentors and the chance to connect with fellow students. One student shared, “The entire experience was nothing short of amazing. I had a fantastic time, made wonderful new friends, and established numerous connections with both seasoned actuarial professionals and my fellow student peers”.

Students and Actuarial Candidates Invited to Apply for a 2019 OLA Travel Award to Attend an Upcoming Conference!

The Organization of Latino Actuaries (OLA) will be sending students and actuarial candidates to four events this year. Students are invited to apply through OLA’s website. Dates below are inclusive of travel days.

OLA will cover the following costs: Air Travel, Lodging, and registration fees. Some meals will be provided.

At each event, an OLA board member will attend the conference with you, providing a direct link to their actuarial and industry network. These events will allow you to learn more about the insurance industry and give you an opportunity to speak to a number of different actuaries about their work. ALPFA and GIS also have career fairs as part of their conference.

SOA Health Meeting

The Health Meeting is an annual meeting for actuaries practicing in health insurance, and has attendance of about 1,000 actuaries. You will have the opportunity to network with OLA students, members and leaders. You will attend the Candidate Connect Day that the SOA plans for students; and have an opportunity to network with actuaries at this conference.

ALPFA – Association of Latino Professionals for America

August 2-6, 2019
Nashville, TN
Deadline: June 15, 2019
Winners will be notified by July 2, 2019

The ALPFA conference has over 50 companies in attendance, including about 10 from the insurance industry.

At the ALPFA convention you will attend workshops hosted by different companies. There will also be opportunities to network with individuals at those companies as well as Latinos working in other industries. Companies are interviewing for internship and full time positions for 2020.

CAS Casualty Loss Reserving Seminar (CLRS)

September 16-18, 2019
Austin, TX

CLRS is a conference for actuaries whose main work is setting reserves for insurance liabilities. The attendance is around 500 actuaries. You will have the opportunity to network with OLA students, members and leaders. You will attend the Student Day that the CAS plans for students; and have an opportunity to network with actuaries at this conference.

GIS – Gamma Iota Sigma

September 25-28, 2019
Dallas, TX
Deadline: August 15, 2019
Winners will be notified by August 28, 2019

GIS is a Risk Management fraternity that is tied very closely to the insurance industry. You will attend workshops on a number of topics aimed at college students. You will network with actuaries attending the conference, and be able to participate in the career fair – where companies are recruiting for internships and full time positions for 2020. In 2018, there were over 20 companies that hire entry level actuaries.

CAS Sponsors Successful 47th Annual Gamma Iota Sigma International Conference

CAS Student Ambassadors with Mallika and AlisaThe Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) joined over 625 of the top insurance, risk management and actuarial science students and advisors from 65 colleges and universities across North America at the Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) 47th Annual International Conference October 4-6, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois. As a Sustaining Partner of GIS and a Platinum Conference Sponsor, the CAS had an active presence at the three-day conference, themed “Amplifying Disruption.” The CAS presented two educational sessions, interacted with students at the career fair, and met with university faculty.

GIS Booth 4The conference offered students exposure to the insurance sector and programming related to its many diverse career paths. With 84 exhibiting organizations and nearly 600 internship and entry level job interviews, the conference remains the most comprehensive event for the next generation of the insurance industry. The CAS provided a booth staffed with CAS member volunteers, who shared their advice and insights as practicing actuaries with students. CAS volunteers included Mallika Bender, Meghan Goldfarb, Chris Gross, James Hollman, Carlo Lahura, Alisa Walch, and Chase Wurdeman.

The two educational sessions led by the CAS included:

  • Understanding Predictive Analytics
    This session, presented by Meghan Goldfarb, FCAS, CSPA, Architecture Director at State Farm and Chris Gross, ACAS, President of Gross Consulting, covered how to get started in predictive analytics and provided examples of real world actuarial applications.
  • Warranty Case Study
    This session, presented by Alisa Walch, FCAS, Actuarial Studies Program Assistant Director at the University of Texas at Austin, took the students through an interesting insurance application, delving into a smart phone warranty case.

In addition, the CAS:

  • Delivered a presentation to university faculty at the Faculty Roundtable.
  • Participated in a gathering of insurance industry trade and professional organization representatives at the Association Roundtable.

Group Photo - BoothAlso of note, during its meeting held in conjunction with the conference, the GIS Board of Trustees approved its new President, CAS Member Wesley Griffiths, FCAS, Second Vice President and Actuary at Travelers. In addition, the Board appointed Mike Boa, Chief Communications Officer at the Casualty Actuarial Society, to his third term on the Board.

Notable industry-leading events that took place at the 2018 Conference:

  • GammaSAID, a groundbreaking student-focused initiative fostering meaningful dialogue and action across the industry around diversity, inclusion, and authenticity, facilitated the exploration of these topics throughout the program, with an interactive presentation during the Recruiters Roundtable, and in sessions led by Chief Diversity Officers and students from the GammaSAID Council.
  • Insurance Nerds Day, a new event featuring 20 engaging Learning Labs, a Distracted Driving Luncheon presented by Travelers, and an engaging line-up of speakers for Nerdy Nanotalks.
  • In partnership with the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF), students and advisors held a letter-writing community service project to benefit Cradles to Crayons and Operation Gratitude, kicking off GIS’s 5th Annual Week of Giving.

Predictive Analytics Presentation - Chris and MeghanGIS is committed to developing and sustaining a robust collegiate talent pipeline and connecting students who are interested in pursuing careers in insurance to opportunities across the industry.

Attention students! The sixth annual Midwest Actuarial Student Conference (MASC) will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, September 21-22.

On Friday, September 21 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm, students will have the opportunity to network with sponsors and peers. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

On Saturday, September 22, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, students will have the opportunity to hear industry experts speak about the actuarial profession. The program topics include updates from the CAS and SOA, industry opportunities, study tips, interview tips, predictive analytics and more!
